The artist was commissioned by British Railways in the mid 1940's to paint a series of paintings to promote railways journeys on the East Coast mainline to York, Newcastle and Berwick upon Tweed.

The Royal Border Bridge is one of the iconic structures on the route of the Flying Scotsman. Designed by Robert Stephenson, Queen Victoria opened it in 1850, and it still carries the East Coast Main Line over the river Tweed.
